What is Dialysis?

Kidney dialysis is a life-sustaining treatment used when the kidneys can no longer effectively filter waste, excess fluid, and toxins from the blood. In healthy kidneys, this process happens continuously, but when someone develops advanced kidney failure—often caused by conditions such as Chronic Kidney Disease or Diabetes—dialysis helps perform part of that essential function. During dialysis, a machine or specialized system removes waste products, balances electrolytes, and helps control fluid levels in the body. Although dialysis can keep a person alive and relieve some symptoms, it typically requires several treatments each week that can last hours at a time, placing significant physical, emotional, and lifestyle demands on patients.

While dialysis is a critical treatment, it cannot fully replace the many complex functions of healthy kidneys. Patients often face ongoing fatigue, strict dietary limitations, medication requirements, and reduced freedom in their daily lives. For many people with kidney failure, a kidney transplant from a living donor offers the best long-term outcome. A transplanted kidney can restore far more natural kidney function, allowing the body to filter blood continuously as it was designed to do. As a result, transplant recipients often experience greater energy, improved overall health, fewer restrictions, and a much higher quality of life than those who must remain on dialysis indefinitely.

All costs for testing and surgery are covered by insurance.
